Meet the New Commandant

Scott Shields is originally from Meriden, CT and is a 1990 graduate of H. C. Wilcox Regional Vocational Technical High School. Upon graduation from high school he joined the US Navy and served for 25 years. During Operations Desert Shield/Storm he served onboard the amphibious assault ship, USS Nassau, from 1991-1992. In 1992 he served onboard the auxiliary supply ship, USS Camden and deployed to the western Pacific and the Middle East. In 1995 he went overseas and supported US, British, New Zealand, and Australian military personnel in Singapore and was awarded Sailor of the Year in 1996 for his efforts. In 1998 he was selected to be a Recruit Division Commander and trained nearly 2,000 men and women at the US Navy’s boot camp in Great Lakes, IL. In 2001 he reported to the conventional aircraft carrier, USS John F. Kennedy and participated in Operation Enduring Freedom and was selected for the rank of Chief Petty Officer. In 2006 he reported to the nuclear powered aircraft carrier, USS John C. Stennis and participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom and earned the rank of Senior Chief in 2008. In 2012 he was selected for the Senior Enlisted Leader position at the Naval Chaplaincy School and Center and was tasked to lead, train, and advise US Navy Chaplains and their enlisted assistants. He retired from the Navy in 2015 and was quickly hired to create curriculum and modernize training for US Navy Religious Program Specialists. In 2018 he joined Camden Military Academy and served as an English teacher, debate coach, chess coach, senior adviser, and, over the last four years, has been the editor of The Bugle, CMA’s alumni newsletter. During his time in the Navy he earned his bachelor’s degree in English literature and his Master’s degree in business administration. His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Navy Commendation Medal (two awards), the Navy Achievement Medal (four awards), and several campaign and unit awards. LTC Shields and his wonderful wife, Tressa, have been married for 32 years and they have three children who are all married.
