Mathematics can be one of the most challenging subjects for many students. Concepts build on one another; so when a student falls behind, it can quickly become overwhelming. At CMA, our Math Lab is a supportive learning environment designed to help students strengthen their math skills, gain confidence, and succeed in the classroom.
At CMA our Math Lab is designed to personalize the experience for the cadet by having his actual math teacher, not some tutor or substitute, guide him with his particular needs. Math Lab at CMA is not a generic space where students from different classes are completing missed assignments. Each cadet will receive the extra instructional time and help they need from their individual teacher in their designated classroom. The Math Lab focuses on individualized learning, allowing students to work and strengthen their math skills at their own pace.
At CMA the faculty recognizes there may be several reasons for a cadet to struggle in math class. Interruptions in their instruction, gaps in foundational knowledge, lack of confidence, adjusting to a new environment, and different learning styles are but a few of those reasons. But we also know that with the right environment and individualized help these struggles can be overcome. Additional time, a personalized learning plan, and encouraging support are the core concepts of the CMA Math Lab.
Cadets who are struggling in math class meet at least twice a week for Math Lab with their teacher in their classroom. With fewer students each cadet receives one-on-one instruction, more time to grasp key concepts, and individualized support. Often, cadets notice quick improvement in their comprehension and assessments. When students begin understanding concepts and start solving problems correctly, their anxiety lessens, their confidence grows, and their grades and outlook improve. This is the goal of the CMA Math Lab.
The CMA Math Lab is more than just a place and time for “extra help,” it is a resource that empowers students to overcome challenges and reach their academic goals. With the right support, practice and encouragement, cadets who once struggled with math can develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
