At Camden Military Academy, learning goes beyond simply reading a chapter, taking notes, and preparing for a test. We believe students benefit when they have opportunities to actively participate in what they are learning. That philosophy was on display today in Cpt. Wilson’s Biology class during a Microscope 101: Investigative Lab.
During the lab, cadets explored different types of bacteria and cells while learning the basic functions and proper use of a microscope. Instead of only looking at pictures in a textbook, students were able to observe specimens firsthand, operate laboratory equipment, ask questions, and make their own observations.
This type of hands-on, tactile learning environment is an important part of the educational experience at Camden Military Academy. As an all-boys school, Camden recognizes that many young men thrive when learning includes movement, exploration, competition, problem-solving, and opportunities to put concepts into practice. Whenever possible, our teachers look for ways to take lessons beyond the traditional lecture and create experiences that encourage cadets to become active participants in their education.
Hands-on learning can also help students understand why the material they are studying matters. Looking at a diagram of a cell is one thing. Learning how to prepare a microscope, focus the lens, examine a specimen, and identify what you are seeing creates an entirely different learning experience.
That same philosophy extends throughout the Camden experience. Whether cadets are conducting a science lab, completing a classroom project, practicing leadership within the Corps of Cadets, participating in athletics, or working together to accomplish a task, they are continually challenged to learn by doing!
For boys who may have struggled to stay engaged in a traditional classroom environment, a more active approach to education can make a meaningful difference. Camden combines structure, small classes, accountability, and hands-on opportunities to create an environment where young men are encouraged to become more engaged and confident learners.
At Camden Military Academy, education isn’t limited to what happens on the pages of a textbook. Sometimes the best way to understand a lesson is to see it, experience it, and do it yourself.
