V-E Day memories
Bill Hamilton (Carlisle Military School Class of 1940) was featured among WWII veterans in an issue of The Post and Courier.  In the newspaper he was pictured looking at was one that he saved. His mem¬ory of that day centers around a castle and a river. He and his buddies were in Salzburg, Austria using a castle for safety until they could head back to American lines. When the word came that peace had arrived, they all ran to a nearby river, pulled the trigger pins on their grenades and tossed them. “All the fish came up,” he said.

On April 24, Bill joined 150 veterans from the Low Country on a trip to the World War II Memorial. He shook hands with General Colin Powell at the memorial. At the long day’s end, a big reception at the Charleston Airport greeted them with a “welcome home.”
