On Saturday February 28th, the varsity baseball team opened up play in the May Plant Credit Union Baseball Bash at North Central. Playing two games on Saturday against Crestwood and North Central. CMA upended Crestwood 4-0 on superior pitching by Max Sheller. He had 7 strikeouts and gave up one hit over five innings to pick up the first win of the year for the Spartans. CMA lost to North Central in the second game. Davis Lord lead the Spartans at the plate going 1-2. On Monday the Spartans played Grey Collegiate in a very competitive game. The Spartans took the early lead 4-0 in the top of the first inning, but turned around and struggled defensively to get an out as they saw the score even up at 4-4. Both teams settled down and Grey took at 7-4 lead into the top of the fifth inning. The Spartans plated 7 runs on some timely hitting and costly walks. They were lead by Ian Benton who was 1-1 with 2 BB's and 3 runs scored. Sheller came on in relief of Kirk Vaniscak to pick up the second win for the Spartans. On Wednesday night the Spartans lost to Cheraw 7-5 and both Benton and Sheller had big nights at the plate with both going 2-3 and having 2 2B's a piece. With the record the Spartans won the tie breaker and with that the Tournament. This is the first championship for the Spartans in 14 years and also the first under Coach Griff Beckham. "It was a great week for these guys, not only the championship but also getting outside and playing. We have struggled like everybody else to practice outside cause of the weather, but I thought our guys competed very well and I am very encouraged for the season." Beckham said. Spartans open up regular season play March 10th at home against Grey Collegiate.
