Senior Chief Shields’ English Classes

Our CMA cadets in English III (American Literature) were quite busy learning about Romanticism and Transcendentalism over the past month. Cadets read the spooky and often unnerving works by Edgar Allen Poe in the weeks prior to Halloween to include a reading of “The Raven” by the famous actor, Vincent Price. Of course the cadets didn’t recognize Mr. Price’s stage name but they sure did recognize his timeless voice! In November, the English III students read an actual autobiographical piece by J.W.C. Pennington; an African-American who escaped from a plantation in Maryland and made his way to Pennsylvania through the assistance of the Quakers, the Underground Railroad, and a few clear nights that shown the North Star.
