Today in HIST- 102 (Western Civilizations), we took a trip to an art gallery to look at paintings and sculptures from the Italian Renaissance. Due to the virus, we are unable to go and visit art galleries, so I decided to bring an art gallery to my students. They got the opportunity to walk around the room staring at these important works of art, while listening to classical music. The goal was to get the students in the atmosphere of an art gallery and to get a new perspective on Renaissance art. The cadets had a blast and enjoyed the opportunity to get to take a “field trip” outside of the classroom; now they cannot say I never took them anywhere during the semester. The art included some key pieces from Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, and Raphael. We held a class discussion at the end of class to discuss our personal favorites and how each piece connected to the Renaissance.
