The 2021 CMA baseball season got underway the first week of February underway. Players and coaches were anxiously awaiting the arrival of the season. The team this year is very young, with 1 senior, 3 juniors, 4 sophomores, 7 freshman, and 3 middle school players. This is an unusually young team with not a lot of returning players from last year's team. Robert Vanderland is the lone senior and one of 7 returners. The rest of the returning players are Ashton Lawerence (11), James Rheinheimer (11), Jonathan Powell (10), Leyson Steele (9), Maddox Brown (9), and Nate Burnett (9). All of these players will be looked upon to be leaders on the team as well as help the new guys adjust to academics and playing baseball at CMA. “We are very excited about the guys coming back that we have. Yes, we will be young, but these kids have shown in the first month of practice that they are going to work hard and take pride in their team,” said Head Coach Griff Beckham.
The coaching staff saw a change this year. With the loss of Coach Dennis Reeder who had been with coach Beckham for 9 years since coming to CMA, the Spartans added Coach Mack Trapp. Coach Trapp will be in charge of the hitters and the outfielders. “While we are going to miss coach Reeder’s experience as a baseball coach, we are very excited to add coach Trapp to our staff. He brings energy and excitement, plus his knowledge of hitting will bode well for our offense.” coach Beckham says. The rest of the players on the team will be a great addition. There are a lot of players that will see playing time this year. Rounding out the rest of the team are Christopher Logan (11), Cohen Thompson (10), Kal Hoxter (10), Maddox Novak (10), Jackson Harrington (9), Jon Valiga (9), John Weiters (9), Will Pittard (9), Conor McNamar (8), and Nicolas Sotomayor (8). “These guys bring some excitement with them plus very good knowledge and skill sets that will put them in the lineup. We are very excited about our new guys. They help fill some needs that we are seeing as we start ramping up our practices and getting ready for the season.” said Coach Beckham
