Chess Club Wins!
The Junior High Spartan Chess Club won First Place in the Midlands Scholastic Chess
Tournament this past weekend, with the High School Spartan Chess Club placing an
honorable third. The tournament field was comprised of forty five students from six
Midlands area schools.
The venue was stunning. Hosted by North Trenholm Baptist Church, the tournament
room, rectangular and holding thirty tables, was a former sanctuary. Mid-morning sun
flooded shafts of light through the stained glass windows that graced the four walls. The
forty foot ceiling and streaming light left one with the impression that the ancient game
was being played out in a medieval castle.
For their individual efforts, CMA's Parker Miethbauer and Aiden Haase took third and
fourth place, respectively, with the team effort garnering First Place. Reginald Singleton,
Michael Suggs, and Kenny Johnson shook off a slow start and persevered for an
honorable Third Place finish. Both teams brought home a little more hardware for the
Camden Military trophy case.
Moreover, the sportsmanship and generosity of spirit exhibited by all of these cadets
was quietly given voice to me by Chess Grandmaster Sam Copeland. A rival coach
also commended me on the teams blend of competitiveness and gracious manners, of
which, perhaps, I am most proud.
