Warm temperatures, a beautiful campus, and well-equipped sports facilities provided a perfect setting for Camden Military Academy’s 2014 Spartan Sports Combine. Under the exemplary organization and direction of Mr. Brent Kendall, the all-day event provided a clear illustration of team work at its best! Cadets in 7th through 11th grades had the opportunity to participate on teams coached by CMA teachers, as they worked together to earn points for their teams throughout the day. Assistance from the senior class helped to create a very successful first Spartan Sports Combine.

Following an exciting and entertaining opening ceremony, each of the ten teams did its best in various sport challenges at stations set up around the CMA campus. Experienced and novice athletes participated in skill drills in the following sports: basketball, baseball, cross country, track, golf, tennis, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, and basketball. Several cadets pleasantly surprised themselves and the CMA coaches as undiscovered talents came to light. After defeating his opponent during his very first experience on the mat, one young man was overheard proudly announcing that he is now a wrestler!

In addition to the team work demonstrated by the cadets, the CMA staff worked together under the leadership of Col. Boland, Col. Armstrong, and Mr. Kendall. “Teacher coaches” selected, motivated, and guided their teams through the busy day. The athletic department and sports coaches planned and set up equipment to create stations where cadets could show off their skills in fun and safe areas. Everyone stayed safely hydrated thanks to the hard work of Chaplain Walker and his team of senior cadets, as they maintained the watering stations. A delicious hotdog lunch prepared by the dining hall staff was served outside to all participants under the watchful eyes and direction of our TAC officers. Office and administrative staff teamed up with faculty members to offer help when and where needed.

At the end of an exhausting day of recreation, competition, and camaraderie, points were tabulated and top scores were announced: 1st place- Mrs. Boland’s Team, 2nd place- MAJ Ararat’s Team, 3rd place- LTC Johnson’s Team. Though these teams earned the highest number of points for the day’s events, the real winners are all the students and staff who are members of TEAM CMA. Go Team!!
