Camden Crest With Old English Edited 1

For those of you that do not know me, my name is Kevin Torres and I am the new teacher of Spanish here at Camden Military Academy and am coordinating the International Club with Mrs. Thaxton.

Due to the recent hurricane, Irma, the island of Barbuda was left in ruins. I have a former boss who is a professor at the medical university in Antigua and they are collecting items for students in Barbuda. I was recently able to collect 6 old textbooks that were going to be thrown out and am asking that if you are going to throw out any textbooks (science, math, world history, English) that you please bring them to my room as the International Club is going to coordinate a relief effort for students in Barbuda so that they continue to receive the education that they deserve. I am at this moment trying to coordinate a way get the materials to the university in Antigua.

Also, the International Club will be joining a program in Colombia that helps children from impoverished rural areas that attend school but do not have the resources to be successful: notebooks, pens, pencils, etc. These children are students that are enrolled in elementary school and the idea is to keep these children in school and off the streets and to help them achieve success and to help them thrive. Materials in Colombia for school are rather cheap (much cheaper than here in the USA) and I will be reaching out to several churches to help us in the effort to help these young children continue to attend school.

We will also be trying to coordinate a movie night once a month as well as attending various cultural festivals. On October 21 the Komen Lowcountry Race for the Cure will take place on Daniel Island, South Carolina. More information in regards to that race and how the International Club will be participating and getting involved will be sent at a later date.
